Our unique take on sustainability and mindful production, these handwoven totes are exclusively crafted using strips of various consumer products.  Whether it’s a previously used shampoo bottle or a sanitiser spray tube, these products have been gifted with a new life in the form of our beloved handmade totes. We worked with the immensely talented artists of Khamir, showcasing their refined technique and artistry to put together a wonderful blend of products.

Adorned with silver strips at regular intervals against the contrast of the coloured plastic, these totes are embellished with a perky pattern. With a high-quality cotton lining and two practical pockets, the tote is functional as well as stylish. The handles are designed using hand-dyed fabric remnants which adds to the charm and finish. Not only do these totes serve their purpose in helping the environment, but they also provide sturdiness, are easy to wash and maintain like any other tote. We take orders in a size that is custom-made for SMT customers.

We love sprinkling a bit of the meaning behind every bag, placing a few words on the bags that hint at what the source item may have been! Learning more about the original product and how something so contrasting can be moulded into a tote bag is a thrilling story! We believe this adds to the overall character and also means no two bags are the same. Although we have similar colourways and a recurring pattern, variations are a part of hand-weaving and are one of the beautiful aspects that make every bag diverse.

We believe in slow fashion, entertaining the idea of using a bag that lasts long. So we’ve created these upcycled tote bags to function as your daily bag, suitable for everyday use and a pillar throughout seasons, fashion trends, and years to come. A simple damp cloth will clean the bag and keep it looking fresh.

One of our core values highlighting the beautiful artistry of traditional weavers and seasoned craftsmen. Thus, we’ve partnered with organizations like Khamir to create products that nurture and promote the rich artisanal traditions but with a modern twist. Khamir is Kachchh Heritage, Art, Music, Information and Resources and means ‘intrinsic pride’ in Kachchhi, the local language.  Formed after the devastating earthquake of 2001, Khamir aims to be a platform for engagement and development of the crafts, heritage, and cultural ecology of the Kachchh region of Gujarat. By working with them, we hope to raise the bar for art and the way we celebrate it.

Weaving as a skill has always been intrinsic to Kachchh, and Khamir’s Upcycled Plastic initiative is a notable example of the way craft can be used to change the conversation and at the same time create opportunities for various communities of society.  Discarded plastic products collected by trained individuals are sorted and segregated according to colour. These items are then thoroughly cleaned and then cut into long strips by women. These strips are then woven into durable textiles, using nylon as a warp and strips as weft. We love supporting this practice as this venture employs plastic collectors, area committees, schools, and small cottage industries. Helping many around the village find work and a source of income, weaving upcycled plastic is a skill that is taught to a new community, thereby creating a supplementary income to medium-skilled weavers, home-based workers disabled, and senior citizens.
